Book Study: Standards Based Learning In Action_Moving from Theory to Practice

Description
Course Description: Thinking about exploring the concepts of standards based (or standards referenced) learning and assessment? Well, look no further! We can help guide you in your search to refine your current strategies in standards-based learning or help you explore your first steps in the journey.

Required Materials: Standards Based Learning: Moving From Theory to Action by Tom Schimmer, Garnet Hillman, and Mandy Stalets. Participants must obtain their own copy of the book--used, borrowed, digital, hard-copy - whatever is best for you and your budget.

Structure of the Book Study:This book study will require you to read a section of the book, respond to a prompt, watch a short video from the book study where the facilitator highlights some ideas or strategies from that section, and then respond to a final prompt. Each chapter will follow a similar process.
You will need to read the book in the order of the chapters and complete one section before you can move on to the next. The CTLE credits will be awarded once you have completed the entire book. Partial credit will not be provided if you do not finish the book study course.

Course Objectives: Participants in this course will explore:
* Step by step guidance, and an exploration into the culture of standards-based education.
* Research-based strategies, resources you can implement right away.
* Strategies to support the communication of these practices for your entire educational community (including parents and students).

Topics include: standards alignment, formative assessment (to include grading), effective feedback, meaningful homework, self and summative assessment, retakes and redos, and proficiency scales.

Ultimately, you will feel more equipped to support your students with a more learning-targeted classroom. Begin with an open mind and the willingness to reflect on past, present, and future experiences with instructional planning.
